Cashier Mode

Your billing counter,
on the tablet you
already own.

Not every customer wants to scan a QR code. Plenty will always walk up and order from a person — and Fooduru takes those orders too, on a cash counter your own staff run. It is the software your billing machine is doing today, on hardware you already have.

Tap the dish, take cash or UPI, print the bill and the kitchen ticket, hand over a token. Counter orders and QR orders share one kitchen screen, one token series and one day's sales — so there is nothing to reconcile at closing.

No terminal to buy · no per-counter licence · no commission on counter sales

One sale, start to finish

Twenty seconds, and nobody had to learn anything

01

The customer orders at the counter

The way they always have — out loud, to a person. No QR to scan, no smartphone needed, nothing for them to learn.

02

Your staff tap it in

A photo grid of your own menu on the counter tablet or phone. Tap the dish, adjust the count, add a parcel charge if it is going out.

03

Cash or UPI, then a token

Confirm how they paid — the cashier page works out the change for cash — and hand over the token. The bill and kitchen ticket print themselves.

04

The kitchen already has it

The order is on the kitchen screen and the public token board the moment it is paid, sitting in the same queue as every QR order.

Every screen, at both sizes

Look at it on the device you'd actually put on the counter

These are not mockups. Every screen below was captured from our live demo restaurant at true device resolution — a tablet lying on a counter and a phone in a hand. Switch between them, and step through a real ₹185 sale from the first tap to the payment.

Phone and tablet

The phone is not the tablet, shrunk.

A tablet has room for a dish grid and a running bill side by side, so the cashier can see the whole order while still tapping dishes. A phone does not — so on a phone the dishes get the full width as a list with big + ADD and quantity controls, and the bill waits behind a single green bar at the bottom showing the item count and the total.

Both were built for one thumb and a moving queue: the tap targets are large, the categories sit in a rail that never scrolls away, and there is a display-size control so a cashier with older eyes can push the whole screen bigger.

  • Runs in the browser — nothing to install on either device
  • Works on the Android tablet or phone already at your counter
  • Connect a receipt printer from an Android device or a laptop
  • Search or category-filter the menu when it runs long
  • Adjustable display size, per device

ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ

A cashier page in the language the person on the counter reads.

Tap ಕನ್ನಡ and the menu items display in Kannada for ordering. It is set per device, so the counter staffed by a Kannada reader can run in ಕನ್ನಡ while the second counter runs in English, off the same menu.

Your customers get the same choice on their own phones — the QR menu carries an EN / ಕನ್ನಡ switch too, and customers can even speak their order in Kannada. One menu, one set of dish names, both languages, everywhere.

One thing we won't pretend

The printed bill and kitchen ticket stay in English. Thermal receipt printers have no Kannada character set, so a translated ticket would come out of the machine as rows of blank boxes. The Kannada name still travels with the order everywhere on screen.

When the line goes down

A cash counter that does not stop when the internet does.

Broadband drops, the router reboots, the mobile data dies in the middle of the lunch rush. Cashier Mode keeps selling — staff carry on ringing up orders, taking cash, printing bills and handing out tokens, with the sale written to the device itself. Every stored order uploads on its own the moment the connection returns.

For a day, not a minute

This is not a short buffer. A counter can trade offline through a whole day and beyond, then sync the lot when the line is back.

Tokens that cannot collide

An offline token carries the device's own prefix, so two counters trading blind can never hand the same number to two customers.

GST numbering stays valid

Offline bills draw from that device's own invoice series, so the numbering holds up when the orders arrive out of order.

The device warns you if a backlog is building up so nothing sits unsynced for days unnoticed. First-time setup of a new device does need a connection.

What your cashier sees when the line drops — and keeps selling through.

The rest of the counter job

Everything a billing counter has to do, and nothing it doesn't.

GST bills and kitchen tickets

Prints a customer bill and a KOT to a thermal ESC/POS printer over USB or Bluetooth, automatically at payment. Choose per device what prints — ticket, bill, or both — or turn printing off on a device with no printer.

Cash arithmetic, done for you

Tap the note the customer handed over — ₹500, ₹200, ₹100 — and the change to give back is on screen before you open the drawer. Leave the pad untouched and it books an exact-change sale.

Parcel charges

Add a flat parcel fee on top of the food when an order is going out. It prints as its own line on the bill and stays out of the food's GST, because it is a packaging charge, not a dish.

One queue with QR orders

Counter sales land on the same kitchen board as QR orders, badged Dine In against Online, and on the same public token display. Your kitchen works one list, not two.

Per-device sales

The day's takings break down by the device that rang them up, so you can see what each counter phone or tablet sold without asking anyone.

Devices you authorise

A new cash counter is authorised with a code from the owner's own Google Authenticator and named on the spot. Revoke it from the dashboard any time, or restrict a device to the cashier page only or the kitchen board only.

Where it stops

What Cashier Mode is not.

Cashier Mode is a cash counter, built for the way a darshini, tiffin room, café, food truck or QSR actually bills: a queue, a token, a bill, next customer. It replaces the billing software doing that job. It is not a full-service dine-in POS, and we would rather you knew that here than found out in month two.

  • No table management. There is no floor plan, no table numbers and no running bill held open against a table while a party eats.
  • No stock or inventory. It does not track raw material, deduct stock as dishes sell, or raise purchase orders to suppliers.
  • No staff attendance or payroll. It records which device rang up a sale, not who clocked in or what they are owed.
  • No customer accounts or loyalty. Counter sales are anonymous by design — a token, not a profile. There are no points, wallets or saved customers.

If those are what you need, a full restaurant ERP will serve you better than we will. If your counter runs on speed, tokens and a clean day's total, that is exactly what this was built for.

No separate billing licence

Cashier Mode is part of the ₹599/month Fooduru Pro plan, alongside QR ordering, the kitchen dashboard, the token display and thermal printing. There is no per-terminal charge, so a second cash counter on a second phone costs nothing more — and no commission is taken on what the counter sells.

FAQ

Questions about counter billing

Can restaurant staff take orders at the counter instead of the customer scanning a QR code?
Yes. Fooduru includes Cashier Mode, a cash counter your own staff operate at the counter. Staff tap dishes on a photo grid, take cash or UPI, and hand over a token — the customer never has to scan anything or own a smartphone. Counter orders and QR orders land on the same kitchen screen and share one token series and one sales report, so the two ways of ordering are never separate systems that have to be reconciled at the end of the day.
Does Fooduru replace the billing software a restaurant is already using?
For a counter-service restaurant — a darshini, tiffin room, café, food truck or QSR — yes: Cashier Mode does the whole billing job, from ringing up items to taking payment to printing a GST bill and a kitchen ticket. It is not a full-service dine-in POS and does not try to be: there is no table map, no per-table running bill, no stock or inventory module and no staff attendance. If billing at a counter is the job, Cashier Mode replaces the software doing it. If a restaurant needs table management and inventory, it does not.
Can Cashier Mode run on a mobile phone or an existing tablet?
Yes, and that is the intended setup — a restaurant uses the tablet already sitting at its counter rather than buying a POS terminal. Cashier Mode runs in the browser, and the layout adapts to the screen: on a tablet in landscape the dish grid sits on the left with a running bill down the right, and on a mobile phone the dishes fill the screen with the bill behind a bottom bar. One thing to plan for: printing to a thermal receipt printer needs an Android phone or tablet, or a Windows or Mac laptop, running Chrome or Edge. Apple's iPhone and iPad browsers do not support the USB and Bluetooth printing standard at all, so a counter that must print bills should be run from an Android device. Everything else about the cash counter works fine anywhere.
Does the cashier billing screen work in Kannada?
Yes. A staff member can switch the cashier page to ಕನ್ನಡ and every dish name in the grid and in the running bill is shown in Kannada script, which matters when the person on the counter reads Kannada more comfortably than English. The choice is per device, so one counter can run in Kannada while another runs in English. One honest limit: the printed bill and kitchen ticket stay in English, because thermal receipt printers have no Kannada character set and a translated ticket would come out as blank boxes.
What happens to the cash counter if the internet goes down?
Cashier Mode keeps selling. With no connection at all, staff carry on ringing up orders, taking cash, printing bills and handing out tokens — the sale is written to the device itself, and every stored order uploads automatically the moment the connection returns. Offline tokens carry a device prefix so two counters cannot hand out the same number, and offline bills use their own GST invoice series so the numbering stays valid. This works across a full day and beyond, not for a few minutes.
Does Cashier Mode print bills and kitchen tickets?
Yes. A counter sale can print a customer bill and a kitchen order ticket (KOT) automatically at payment, to a thermal ESC/POS printer connected over USB or Bluetooth. What prints is a per-device setting — kitchen ticket only, customer bill only, or both — and auto-printing can be switched off entirely on a device that has no printer, with any bill reprinted later from the kitchen board. GST bills carry the restaurant's own GSTIN and invoice numbering. The printing device must be an Android phone or tablet, or a Windows or Mac laptop, running Chrome or Edge: printing uses the browser's USB and Bluetooth standards, which Apple does not implement on the iPhone or iPad. If a counter already runs on an Apple tablet it can still take orders and payments — it simply will not drive the receipt printer.
How much does Cashier Mode cost?
Nothing extra. Cashier Mode is part of the ₹599 per month Fooduru Pro plan, alongside QR ordering, the kitchen dashboard, the token display and thermal printing. It is not sold as a separate billing module and there is no per-terminal licence, so putting the cash counter on a second phone at a second counter costs nothing more.
Can an owner see which staff member or device took which order?
Yes. Every counter sale records the device that rang it up, and the daily sales report breaks takings down per device, so an owner can see what each counter phone or tablet sold. Devices are named when they are first authorised, and each one is authorised with a six-digit code from the owner's own Google Authenticator app — so a random phone cannot simply open the cashier page by knowing the address. An owner can revoke any device from the dashboard, and a device can be restricted to the cashier page only, or the kitchen board only.
Can the counter take UPI payments through Cashier Mode?
Yes, as cash or UPI. The customer pays at the counter the way they already do — cash, or UPI into the restaurant's own account — and the cashier confirms which on screen before the order goes to the kitchen. For a cash sale the cashier page also does the arithmetic: tap the note the customer handed over and it shows the change to give back. Money from counter sales goes directly to the restaurant; Fooduru never holds it and takes no commission on it.
